Why Pursue BRCA Testing

Have a close relative who has battled breast or ovarian cancer? If so, you may want to check into being tested for the BRCA gene. It's a no-brainer. See August 1, 2008 posting.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I too carry the BRCA1 gene. When I met with the genetic counselor, she actually discouraged me from having the test right away, but I insisted. It came back positive (she was surprised!) I had a bilateral mastectomy when I was diagnosed with BC in December of 2006. I had my hysterectomy in Jauary 2007 and they found a small cancerous tumor in my falopian tube. I did have to undergo 6 chemos and have been doing great since then.
I have always felt that the statistics for genetic cancer is so skewed since so few get the test.
God's Blessings to you!

Thank you for sharing your story. You've confirmed what I believe: You have to be assertive/proactive about your health. Glad you did that and saved your life!
